Does your "clean" laundry smell slightly musty? You're not alone. Front-load washing machines are notorious for trapping moisture, which leads to mold and bacterial growth. If left unchecked, this can even trigger allergies or skin irritations.
Leave the Door Ajar
The simplest tip is often the most effective. After every load, leave the washer door open for at least an hour (or indefinitely if your laundry room is secure). This allowing moisture to evaporate instead of sitting in the dark drum.
Wipe the Rubber Seal
The rubber gasket (the seal around the door) is the primary hiding place for mold. Every few weeks, wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Be sure to pull back the folds of the rubber—you'd be surprised what gets trapped in there!
Run an Empty Hot Cycle
Once a month, run a "Tub Clean" cycle or a standard 90°C cycle with nothing but a cup of white vinegar or a dedicated washer cleaner. This helps dissolve soap scum and kills bacteria hiding in the outer drum.
Clean the Detergent Drawer
Soap scum and fabric softener can build up in the dispenser drawer, creating a slimy environment for mold. Most drawers can be popped out completely—give it a scrub in the sink with an old toothbrush.
Machine Still Smells?
If you've tried cleaning and the odor persists, there might be a blockage in the internal pipes. Let's take a look.
